Brasington Fights Cancer; Wins Feature
08/09/2013 (Auburn MI) With Mother Nature washing out the previous two weeks of scheduled racing, fans and drivers were excited to finally get on the track to compete at Tri-City Motor Speedway. Graff Chevrolet of Bay City and Maier and Associates sponsored the evening’s events that saw 100 drivers and cars filling the pit area.
For 2013, #0x Zach Olger has run the table as far as putting numbers in the feature win column of his stat book. However, in the shadows has been another story that has been over looked. #5 Brook Brasington has been dealing with a cancer prognosis this summer and has been receiving chemotherapy every other week in order to fight that heath battle. Racing has been therapy for the Evart, MI driver as he endures treatment. With a strong run a few weeks ago at Merritt Speedway, Brasington, a former Cherry Speedway Street Stock Champion, was feeling good about his chances of capturing his first ever late model feature win. He, along with #75 Rod Laney picked up heat race wins earlier in the night. Brasington would get to start the feature event from the front row along with #20 Joe Hanson. Hanson built a commanding lead in the first half of the event with Brasington slipping back to third. As the race continued, the track began to slicken, which played into the hands of Brasington. He would erase the deficit, pass Hanson on lap seventeen, and hold off Olger for his first feature victory. #117 Kevin Reeve, Hanson, and #72 Kyle Borgman were the top five finishers.
After an over 330 hour wait, the Auburn Hotel Street Stocks were able to complete the feature event that rained out back on July 19th. #1k John Krause would lead the field back to the green flag. However, it did not take long for #7r Dave Newcomb to make the pass for the lead. That would last to the checkered flag for his third feature win of 2013. #28 Jarred Rizer put up a strong fight but could only muster a runner-up finish. #7d Brenten Deyoung, Krause, and #21e Dan Engel completed the top five. Heat races for the regularly scheduled portion of Friday’s show had Deyoung, Newcomb, and point leader #75s Kevin Strong as the winners. #98 Ricky Smith had to win the B-Main in order to be part of the 20-lap feature event. #34r Jerry Light and #34 Jerry Oatley would lead the field to the green flag. Oatley would lead the opening lap before #15.2 Smokin’ Joe Cunningham would lead the next couple of laps. Strong would move from twelfth to the lead on lap four. Newcomb, who had won earlier, was able to fight his way to the front and took the lead on lap nine. That lead was short lived as Strong took it back on lap eleven and held on for the feature win. Deyoung was able to sneak his way into second and was followed by Newcomb, #75 Kenny Keller, and Krause.
Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA driver #02 Brody Bowser has had a change of luck now that he has jumped behind the wheel of Duane Mocherman’s modified. He won last week at Crystal Motor Speedway, won his heat on Friday, and looked to be the man to beat in the feature event as he led the first seven laps. Cautions would bunch the field and allowed for the mid-pack starting cars to catch up to Bowser. #7d Myron Deyoung was one of those cars. Starting ninth, he took the lead shortly before the halfway point of the event. Point leader #20w AJ Ward tracked down Deyoung and looked to have made the pass on the final lap. However, a caution would realign the field for a one lap shoot out. Deyoung was able to hold off Ward to pick up the feature win. Bowser, #4s Toby Steele, and #D42 Don Sauter completed the top five. #7s Lucas Small won the b-main with #19 Joe Fowler and #90v Bob Hutson took heat gold.
#99 Rick Beauchamp, once again, had a strong enough car to lead the opening laps of the Elgin Pro Stock feature event. #21 Steven Hilliker, with a bit of knowledge passed from his brother David, who ran the Late Model feature earlier, used the cushion on the top of the track to rocket his way to the front on lap eight. He was untouched for the remainder of the event and pulled off his third victory of the season. Beauchamp, #53 Shane Aeschliman, #77k Kevin Morell, and #M65 Rick Spencer were the top five finishers. Hilliker, #91 Gary Shank Jr., and #71 Timmy Near captured heats. #44 Jeff Haley won the B-main.
#95 Duane Winchell Jr has let very few drivers enter victory lane in the Steven’s Cycle Sales and Service Stock Rockets in 2013. Although the competition is getting tougher, Winchell once again won the heat and feature events. #K11 Kendall Morrison led much of the feature before Winchell made the pass for the lead with two laps remaining. #65 Garrett Laudenslayer finished his third in his first ever feature event.
