06/07/2013 (Auburn MI) Finally, a beautiful night greeted fans and drivers at the Tri-City Motor Speedway this past Friday night. Dan Dan the Mattress Man sponsored the night of entertainment which included the first ever mattress race and a tug-of-war competition for Men’s Night. Some new faces that have worked hard to adapt to dirt racing finally earned that elusive first victory on this night.

The Auburn Hotel Bar and Grill Street Stock Division feature was the premier division of the evening as they were chasing a $533 top prize for an extended 33-lap feature that started the field of twenty one drivers three wide instead of the tradition two wide. The field was managed to get started for a few laps before cautions plagued the field. However, once the green made an extended appearance, point leader #75s Kevin Strong and #3 Loren Short proved that this was their race to decide. The swapped the lead a number of times with Short running the higher line and forcing Strong to have to make the pass on the bottom. #15.2 Smokin’ Joe Cunningham was able to take advantage of Strong fading back to challenge for the lead. However, with about five laps to go, Short was able to pull a multicar-length advantage and finally took his first dirt feature win of his career. #21 “Evil” Dan Engel slipped by Cunningham for the runner-up spot with B-Main Winner #10 Brent Reil 4th and Point leader #75s Kevin Strong rounding out the top five. Heats were captured by #28 Jared Rizer #7d Brenten DeYoung, and Short. Reil also was the fastest qualifier of the night bit was not able to break the Street Stock track record.

The Elgin Pro Stocks Have put on a great show all season with some promising talent throughout the field. Heat race winner #44 Jeff Haley looked like he may have swept away the gremlins that have plagued him so far in 2013 as he easily won his heat. He had the best seat in the house for the green flag of the feature event. He immediately went to work on that top spot for the first few laps until Midland Driver #21 Steve Hilliker, who also won his heat race earlier in the evening, took over the lead. By the halfway point, #71 Timmy Near started to use the inside line to his advantage. After a number of late race restarts, Near was finally able to best Hilliker to drive to the first dirt feature win of his career. Hilliker would have to settle for another runner-up finish. #77k Kevin Morell would finish strong in third and was followed by Haley and 2012 champion #M65 Rick Spencer. #14 Roy Bradley Jr. won the B-Main.

The Steven’s Cycle Sales and Service FWD Stock Rockets are still growing in number and it was #95 Duane Winchell Jr. that swept both the heat and feature wins for a third night. #K11 Kendall Morrison, and defending champion #7 Tyler Morell completed the event as the top three behind Winchell Jr. #99 Dustin Beauchamp completed the top four finishers.

Forty Year Veterans #19 Joe Fowler and #776 Rusty Zeigler, along with #7s Lucas Small won preliminary events to gain admittance to the twenty lap main event for the Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA modified class. The feature was possibly the most exciting one of the night as Small would lead the opening laps of the event. However, it was the drivers in the sixth and seventh row, #7d Myron DeYoung and #20w “Livewire” AJ Ward that would steal the spotlight from the other eighteen drivers in the field. They would swap the lead each and every lap for the final ten laps before lapped traffic allowed DeYoung to have the advantage and pick up his second win of 2013. Ward, Fowler, #14 Chris Barton, and #70 Johnny DeYoung were the top five.

#45 Kevin Reeve was hoping for a better night in the Comp Cams Late Model division after his first night saw him taking a wounded car back to Jackson. He started on the pole and looked tough after his heat race win earlier in the night. He started out strong in the feature until his tire let go just three laps in and handed the lead to #6r of Carl Ries. However, ninth place starter, #0x of Zach Olger quickly took that lead away from Ries. The track changed a bunch in twenty five laps, but Olger was able to master the slickening conditions to cruise to another feature win for the St. Johns driver. Reis, #20d Dan Delong, #0jr Kris Patterson, and #21h David Hilliker were the four closest finishers behind Olger. Patterson Jr. won the other heat race.

Next week is the Greased Pig 3.0 and Autograph night at TCMS. A full show with the Comp Cams Late Models, Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified drivers going after a $1033 top prize for the feature win, Elgin Pro Stocks, and Auburn Hotel Street Stocks. There will be an Autograph session for the youngsters. 7-13 year olds admission is just $1, while kids six and under get in for FREE! Race time on Friday is at 7:55. Wieland Contracting will be the evening’s entertainment provider! For more information regarding next week’s shows and any show in 2013, visit our website www.tricityracetrack.com ! Come see what everyone is talking about at the New Tri City Motor Speedway!!!

New Faces Triumph at Tri City Motor Speedway

05/25/2013 (Auburn MI) The second half of the Memorial Day weekend show, brought 76 racers from across Michigan to the New Tri City Motor Speedway with the Black Gold Open Modified Series (OMP) being the premier division going after a $1,777 to win top prize and the opportunity to put the winner of the feature in position to possibly win $3,333 if they can sweep all three Black Gold OMP races in 2013.

After the track seeing unusually fast and tacky conditions over the past few weeks, the sunshine and winds provided a much different racing surface than previous evenings. The drivers had their hands full in the heats trying to find grip. #91 Adam Thrush, #J31 Mickey Carmen, #2 Travis Stemler, and #711 Scott Peyton were able to master the tough conditions to gain their spot in the feature event by winning their preliminary qualifiers. Thrush and #21w Brad Wilson led the field of twenty to the green flag in the 37-lap feature. Thrush was well on his way to being the unbeatable car in the field as he built a big lead. However, he overdrove turn one and lost grip, spinning off the track and bringing out the caution. This would put him at the back of the field where he never was a factor for the remainder of the race. This handed the lead to #1e Jeffery Erickson. Erickson would spend a great deal of time working the high groove and extended his lead over the field by a half straightaway. A late caution with less than five laps to go, would bunch the field back up for one last run at the win. Erickson would choose to start on the low line and put #2k Aaron Morey alongside for the drop of the green to resume the race. This ended up being the wrong choice for Erickson as Morey would snatch the lead away and lead the final three laps to pick up his first TCMS feature win. Stemler, Erickson, #43a Mark Anderson, and #19 Joe Fowler completed the top five.

The Auburn Hotel Bar and Grill Street Stock Division feature was full of excitement, as it tends to do each and every week. ##18L David Lester and #72 Matt Erndt were in charge of setting the pace to the green flag for the feature event. Erndt would lead a couple laps early before 2011 Champion #7r Dave Newcomb, who drove the bottom line, would take over the lead. Newcomb, who had been battling power issues over the past two nights, looked to have his luck turn around as he looked to run away from the field. #28 Jared Rizer was using the rim of the speedway to track down Newcomb as he was having difficulty getting through lapped traffic. Maneuvering through three-wide traffic proved to be exciting for the fans to watch as Rizer and Newcomb would swap the lead back and forth a number of times before Rizer finally was able to beat Newcomb to the line on the twentieth and final lap to pick up his first ever feature win. Newcomb, #10 Brent Reil, #51 Todd Winchell, and #75s Kevin Strong completed the top five. Heats were captured by Rizer and Strong.

#84 Bill Dunham had led many laps in his Mini Sprint car over the past season, but had not closed the deal in the late laps. It turned out to finally be his night as he zipped through traffic in the feature event to lead and win by a large margin over the field. #12 Tom Hunt was the runner-up. Ericksons filled up the top five with #38 Mack, #50 Charles, and #007 Paul finishing third through fifth spots. Hunt and #3 Rusty Reyelts won heat gold.

The Elgin Pro Stocks had another dramatic finish to their feature event. #77d Darren Mularz and defending champion #M65 Rick Spencer won their heats and set the stage for the feature battle. #93 John Robbins and Mularz led the feature field to the green flag. Robbins kept a strong fight with Mularz through the first half of the twenty lap feature before overdriving turn four and losing spots on the track. This gave Mularz some breathing room until Spencer tracked him down via the low groove. This was another race where the lead kept swapping between first and second. However, it was the defending Street Stock Champion’s night as Mularz held off Spencer for the win. Spencer had to accept second place after a tough battle. #53 Shane Aeschliman, #94 Chad Raby, and Robbins crossed the stripe within the top five spots.

The Steven’s Cycle Sales and Service FWD Stock Rockets are still growing in number and it was #95 Duane Winchell Jr. that swept both the heat and feature wins for a second night. #K11 Kendall Morrison, and defending champion #7 Tyler Morell completed the event as the top three behind Winchell Jr.

Next week is Kids Night at TCMS. A full show with the Comp Cams Late Models, Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modifieds, Elgin Pro Stocks, Auburn Hotel Street Stocks, and Steven’s Cycle Front Wheel Drive Stock Rockets. There will be an Autograph session for the youngsters. 7-13 year olds admission is just $1 while kids six and under get in for FREE! Race time on Friday is at 7:55. For more information regarding next week’s shows and any show in 2013, visit our website www.tricityracetrack.com ! Come see what everyone is talking about at the New Tri City Motor Speedway!!!

Winners Repeat at Tri-City Motor Speedway

05/24/2013 (Auburn MI) Unseasonably cool temperatures tried to cool off the hot hands from last week, but speed prevailed throughout the night on the first of two events over the Memorial Day weekend at the new Tri-City Motor Speedway. Joint Clutch and Gear were the title sponsors of the night’s six in one show.

Sixteen Late Models started the feature action with #5v Dan Vance and #75 Rod Laney bringing the small but tough field of drivers to the green flag. Cautions seemed to plague the premier class and it seemed like there would not be a long string of green flag laps. Laney would lead a handful of laps at the beginning before #20 Joe Hanson took over. By lap 13, St John’s driver #0jr, Kris Patterson would take the point. Opportunities came often for other drivers via late caution flags. One caution included a scary flip on the front stretch from Marlette’s #50 Scott Phillips that brought out the red flag (driver was okay). His set up a two lap shoot-out between last week’s winner #0x Zach Olger and Patterson. Patterson was able to take advantage of a tacky and tough track to pick up his first feature of the season, beating out Olger. Midland driver #21 David Hilliker was third and followed by Laney and #20d Dan Delong. Heat races were captured by Patterson and #24 Alex Hupert.

After tough starts to the season, #4as Toby Steele and #7d Myron Deyoung had the opportunity to start at the front of the field for the start of the Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA feature event. Deyoung would waste no time manipulating the fast but bumpy track and hold the lead. However, drivers from the middle of the pack were quickly working their way toward the front to challenge the Stanton driver for the win. Last week’s winner, #20w AJ Ward and 2011 champion #111 Josh Borton were the two that came after Deyoung for the top spot. A number of cautions handed the lead back and forth over the 20-lap feature. However, it was last week’s winner, Ward that would prevail after a green-white-checkered finish to pick up his second TCMS feature win of the season and his fourth for the season. Deyoung and Borton would have to settle for second and third. #14 Chris Barton and #776 Rusty Zeigler would complete the top five. Heats were won by Deyoung and #42 Craig Vance.

For another week, the Auburn Hotel Bar and Grill Street Stock Division feature starting spot was the toughest ticket to get with thirty competitors in the pits. #57 TJ Gilbert, #119 Mike Sparks, #21t Kyle Thomas, #15.2 Joe Cunningham, and #28 Jared Rizer, won preliminary races to gain admittance to the feature. #14 Ray Biskner Jr. and #34 Jerry Light took the field of twenty to the green flag. Light would lead the first handful of laps before last week’s winner #75s Kevin Strong took over the lead within three laps from his eleventh-place starting spot. He would bring #119 Mike Sparks with him. Strong, who set the track record earlier on with a lap time of 15.624 was able to use that speed to hold off Sparks for the win for the second week in a row. Light finished third with Rizer and #8 Aaron Spearling taking top five finishes.

After a week off, the Elgin Pro Stocks were ready to get back to action on the 3/8 clay race surface. #71 Timmy Near, #21 Steven Hilliker, #94 Chad Raby, and #99 Rick Beauchamp proved to be early contenders for winning the twenty lap feature event. Newcomers, #93 John Robbins and #35 Bob Fetters Sr led the feature field to the green flag. Hilliker was able to wrestle the lead away from Rick Beauchamp before later dropping out. #01 Randy Radabaugh, in his new car emerged as a contender for the checkered flag, but Greenville’s #52 Ryan Kent had other ideas and took the lead in the final two laps to pick up his first feature win of 2013. Radabaugh, Near, #24 Don Hintz, and #40 Ron Bieri took home top-five finishes.

The Steven’s Cycle Sales and Service FWD Stock Rockets are still growing in number and it was #95 Duane Winchell Jr. that swept both the heat and feature wins. #K11 Kendall Morrison, defending champion #7 Tyler Morell, #99 Dustin Beauchamp, and #777 Dustin Vincent making up the top five finishers.

The first leg of the Figure-8 series saw #34 Jerry Oatley and #57 TJ Gilbert leading the field through the intersection to the green flag in the feature event. Oatley emerged as the early favorite before getting caught up in lapped traffic. This gave the lead to #72 Matt Erndt. He, too, would experience mechanical problems and dropping him out of the chance to capture a feature win. #10 Brent Reil, who started eighteenth on the field, was able to maneuver through the field and capture a big figure-eight win. #1 Randy Radabaugh, from sixteenth finished in the runner-up. #05 Anthony Williams, #7x Jeff Daniels, and #0 Ray Derminer completed the top five.

Speed Record Shattered at Tri City Motor Speedway

05/17/2013 (Auburn MI) Wet weather tried to make another appearance on a Friday, but it couldn’t completely hold off the night’s activities. A 90 minute weather delay around dusk threatened to wash out the show, but the tenacious TCMS track prep crew was able to run the moisture away. A great crowd, along with 97 competitors, came out and saw record-breaking laps turned on the 3/8 clay oval over the course of the evening. Graff Chevrolet of Bay City and Wayne Maier and Associates were the title sponsors of the night’s activities.

The first visit in 2013 for the Sprints on Dirt gave them an opportunity to break the track record. #0 Steve Irwin shattered the record by nearly sixth tenths of a second with a lap time of 11.136 (nearly 120 MPH average)!! Eight Sprint cars of the 22 that participated broke the track record!! They would be the first of four main events with a 25 lap feature. A malady on the first lap took out crowd favorite #2m Dustin Daggett. As he went up and over in a violent flip he collected a number of strong cars including the record holding Irwin. On the third try, #3w Ryan Grubaugh and #49 Greg Dalman took the green flag with Dalman leading the opening laps. Grubaugh took the top spot on lap six when Dalman bobbled in turn four. #19 Brett Mann started reeling in your race leader, Grubaugh, in lapped traffic at lap fifteen. Grubaugh would maneuver through the slower traffic with ease and picked up his second career TCMS SOD feature win. Mann, Dalman #16 Greg Wheeler, and #77 Keith Love completed the top five finishers. Heats went to #49 Robert Huisken, Mann, and Dalman picked up heat gold.

Twenty-two Comp Cams Late Models started the feature action with #20 Joe Hanson and #7f Brad Finkbeiner bringing the strong field of drivers to the green flag. After numerous restarts to Hanson would take the lead and jump well away from the field as he would lead the first eighteen laps of the twenty-five scheduled laps. Last week’s runner-up, St John’s driver #Ox Zach Olger, would weave is way through a number of record-setting laps from his eighth starting spot and zip by Hanson on lap nineteen. After that, it was lights out for the rest of the field as Olger would not be denied his first 2013 TCMS feature win. Midland driver #21 David Hilliker was able to slip past Hanson to take second spot. Hanson, #24 Alex Hupert, and #50 Scott Phillips were the top five. Heat races were captured by Hanson, Brindley and Olger.

#27 Matt Szecsodi and 2011 TCMS Champion #111 Josh Borton won heat races in the Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modifieds division. The twenty lap main event was led to the green flag by #7s of Lucas Small and #5 of Tanner Pray. Small would jump out to a nice lead for the first lap and a half before spinning on his own in turn two forcing him to restart at the rear of the field. Borton would lead laps two and three as the field returned to green flag racing. Opening night runner-up, #20 AJ “Livewire” Ward would have use the high side to his advantage and quickly move from eighth to the lead and never look back. He cruised to his first win of 2013 and was followed by Borton, defending champion #EZ1 Don Hintz, #42 Craig Vance and opening night winner #19 Joe Folwer.

Once again, the Auburn Hotel Bar and Grill Street Stock Division feature was the biggest field in the pits with twenty-nine drivers hoping to be part of the feature. #7d Brenten Deyoung, #15.2 Joe Cunningham, and #28 Jared Rizer, #51 Todd Winchell, and #20 Ted Owens won preliminary races to gain admittance to the feature. Rizer and Deyoung would get to lead the field to the start of the feature. Rizer would lead the opening lap before Deyoung would take over until lap twelve. #75s Kevin Strong continues to put pressure on Deyoung before he was able to take over that lead at lap thirteen. Meanwhile, #3 Loren Short had a dirt track checkered flag in his mind. With three laps remaining, Short would take over the lead forcing Strong to put up a last lap challenge. As Short took the high line coming out of turn four, Strong was able to find enough grip to make the pass by half of a car length at the finish line over Short. #21e Dan “Evil” Engel, 2011 champion #7r Dave Newcomb, and #10 Brent Reil completed the top five.

Next week is a holiday doubleheader at TCMS. Friday night, a full show with the Comp Cams Late Models, Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modifieds, Elgin Pro Stocks, Auburn Hotel Street Stocks, and Steven’s Cycle Front Wheel Drive Stock Rockets. We will also feature the first leg of the Figure 8 series for Street Stock type cars. Friday night’s entertainment will be brought to you by Joint Clutch and Gear. Race time on Friday is at 7:55. Saturday night will feature Elgin Pro Stocks, Auburn Hotel Street Stocks, Steven’s Cycle FWD Stock Rockets, the first appearance of the Mini Sprints, and the first race for the Open Modified. The Black Gold Series, a three race series, will pay $1,777 for the winner of the 37-lap feature. This winner will have the opportunity to go after a $3,333 bonus if they can win the feature of all three Black Gold series races in 2013. We will also have a spectacular Fireworks display at intermission to celebrate the Memorial Day holiday weekend!! Race time for Saturday is 7:27. For more information regarding next week’s shows and any show in 2013, visit our website www.tricityracetrack.com ! Come see what everyone is talking about at the New Tri City Motor Speedway!!!
