Familiar Names Find Victory Lane at Tri-City Motor Speedway.  Morey Closer to Big Pay Day.

07/07/2013 (Auburn MI)   Back to back nights of entertainment and great weather brought fans and drivers to the fast 3/8ths clay oval of the Tri-City Motor Speedway. Friday night’s Mid Season Championship show was provided Michigan Air Compressor Technologies and Graff Chevrolet of Bay City was the title sponsor for the Saturday portion of the holiday weekends events. Hot humid temperatures kept the racing surface tacky and quick for the drivers to showcase the horsepower and driving skill.

The Auburn Hotel Bar and Grill Street Stock Division feature, on Friday, showed fans that three and four-wide racing can be done on the wide and racy surface. Tenth place starter, #75s Kevin Strong was able to weave through numerous incidents and five-wide racing to wrestle away the lead from #75 Kenny Keller to cruise to the win and extend his point lead. #51 Todd Winchell, #21 Kyle Thomas, #7r Dave Newcomb, and Keller completed the top five. #7d Brenten Deyoung and Strong took home heat race wins.

Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA driver #78 Brody Bowser saw his bad luck continue as he lost his rear wheel while leading the feature event on Friday.  #20w AJ Ward took over the lead until he saw the track and his handling change.  #70m Johnny Deyoung was able to take over the top spot and hold off #19 Joey Fowler, #7d Myron Deyoung, Ward, and #42 Craig Vance for his first victory of the season.  Fowler, #27 Matt Szecsodi, M. Deyoung, and #511 Chaz Pray were winners of the earlier races.

The Comp Cams Late Model division had the same ending as we have seen since the beginning of June.  #0x Zach Olger tracked down leader #28 Sam Eppling to win his fifth feature of the season and fourth in a row.  Behind second place finisher Eppling were #04 Wade Witherspoon, #24 Alex Hupert and #75 Rod Laney.  Fridays heat races went to Eppling and Hupert.  Hupert would track down leader Laney in the Saturday night portion of the doubleheader weekend and pick up his first ever Late Model feature win.  #20 Joe Hanson won the Saturday heat race.

The Elgin Pro Stock heat race winners, #31 Bill Fetters and #35 Bob Fetters Sr. led the field to the green flag for Friday night’s feature event.  #99 Rick Beauchamp led the first half of the event before Hilliker methodically tracked him down on lap fourteen to lead the final eleven laps to his second victory of 2013.  #71 Timmy Near, 2012 point champion and runner-up, #M65 Rick Spencer, #9 Isaac Wolfgang and Beauchamp came across the final strip close behind.  #10 Brent Reil won the B-Main.  On Saturday, Near took the lead away from Beauchamp to pick up his second feature of the year. Wolfgang, Beauchamp, and Morell won preliminaries on Saturday night.

Saturday nights premier division was the Black Gold Open Modified series.  Heat race winners #2 Travis Stemler and #77 Joe Rokos brought the field of 20 to the green flag of the 35-lap main event.  Rokos looked to be the man to beat as he took a commanding lead at the beginning of the event.  Attrition would take it’s toll during a long green flag run that saw #711 Scott Peyton take over the lead.  However, with four laps remaining, #2k Aaron Morey, who won the first Black Gold feature Memorial Day weekend, used the bottom side to snatch the lead away and win the second of three events for the Black Gold Series Stemler, #22 Tim Stemler, Peyton, and #21w Brad Wilson would complete the top five. Saturday September 7th will be the third leg of the Black Gold series.  If Morey can win that third feature it will be worth an additional $3,333 on top of the $2,081 to win on September 7th.

Steven’s Cycle Sales and Service FWD Stock Rockets had #K11 Kendall Morrison win his heat race, but it was #95 of Duane Winchell Jr. winning yet another feature event and extending his large point lead over the rest of the competition.  Winchell would also sweep both heat and feature on Saturday night.

Next week is Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club.  Also, there will be a 20 lap Figure eight feature.  This full show will also include Comp Cams Late Models, Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified, Elgin Pro Stocks, and Auburn Hotel Street Stocks. General Admission for adults $14, 55 and better $13, 7-13 year olds $8, 6 years and under FREE!
