07/04/2014 (Auburn MI) With Cornfest activities throughout the city of Auburn, the festive atmosphere to the 3/8ths clay oval at Tri-City Motor Speedway for a 34-lap $543 top prize in the Auburn Hotel street stock division. The nights activities were sponsored by Stanford LP Gas of Midland and Gladwin, The Pizza Dude of Pinconning, and Rodnick Chiropractic of Midland, Saginaw, Clare, and Commerce Township. In addition, it was Firefighter and Police appreciation night with those members being recognized in the night’s opening ceremonies and with a 4-wide salute with the Street Stock feature starters each flying a large American Flag. The Michigan Auto racing Fan Club was also in attendance and the helmet bag was given to track volunteer Brian Bennett.
With the Auburn Hotel Bar and Grill Street Stocks as the highlighted division of the evening, their feature would be the first to pour out on the track for the increased lap feature event. Four qualifying heats, won by #4 Wayne Simmons, #8 Aaron Spearling, #75s Kevin Strong, and #26 Mike Vandermark Jr, helped solidify the first 16 positions available in the big event. The B-main, won by #12 Eric Lake, would filling the remaining four spots at the tail of the starting field. Whittemore driver, #73TR Kyle Reilly, found himself leading early from his front row starting spot. By lap eight, 2011 Track Champion #7r Dave Newcomb had wrestled the lead away from Reilly. However, last week’s winner and defending Track Champion, Strong would fight his way to battle with Newcomb for the lead. They would swap positions for a number of laps before #3s Timmy Near, jumping behind the wheel of Loren Short’s for the evening, grabbed the lead for good on lap 28. Near, who started 12th, would cruise to his first victory of 2014 and a big payday. Strong, Lake, Vandermark Jr, and Reilly would complete the top five finishers.
Another tough field of Comp Cams Late Models invaded TCMS on Friday night. Heat races were captured by defending champion and last week’s feature winner #0x Zach Olger, Midwest Racing Scene’s Dirt Driver of the Week #23v Ryan Vanderveen, and St John’s driver #0p Kris Patterson Jr . A number of cautions plagued the opening laps of the 25-lap feature. Once the green flag flew and the first official lap was completed, fourth place starter #6r Carl Ries captured the point and was never challenged throughout the race leading all 25-laps. Olger, Patterson Jr, Vanderveen, and #21 David Hilliker where the top five finishers.
Steven’s Cycle Sales and Service Stock V6 Bombers had the biggest field of the season as the new class continues to grow. All of them were hoping that they could break the dominance that #K11 Kendall Morrison. #52 Richard Shuler would win the heat race and had the pole position for the 12-lap feature. However, outside pole sitter #99 Dustin Beauchamp would jump out to the lead and never looked back as he led all twelve laps on his way to his first victory of the season ending Morrison’s string of victories. The reminder of the top five were, #09 Jack Freese, Morrison, #65 Garrett Laudenslager, and Shuler.
Rookie #19 Kody Johnson and #7s Lucas Small would lead the Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified drivers to the green flag of their feature. Heat race winner and fourth place starter, #7d Myron DeYoung would make an immediate move for the lead. From then on, he would lead the field all the way to the checkered flag ahead of Point Leader #20w AJ Ward, heat race winner #19 Joe Fowler, #4s Toby Steele, and #72 Terry Gittins.
Only two drivers have been to victory lane in the Elgin Pro Stock Division. #3 Loren Short had won the previous three features after #21 Steven Hilliker started the season with winning the first four features. Short would capture a win in his heat race as did #11 Roy Bradley Sr. and #35 Bob Fetters Sr.. #99 Rick Beauchamp picked up the B-main win. Fetters Sr would lead the first seven laps of the feature before #100 Gary Shank would lead lap eight. By lap 9, Beauchamp , from his 16th place starting spot, became the leader. He looked like he was well on his way to his first Pro Stock victory. Short and Hilliker were within their own battle as they tried besting one another as they clawed their way to the front. Hilliker would finally get the opportunity to try the bottom and was able to track down Beauchamp, pass him, and go on to the win. Beauchamp would finish a disappointing second and was followed by Short, Shank, and #40 Ron Bieri.
