Olger Blisters Late Model Field At Tri-City Motor Speedway

(Auburn) “I rarely get to run wide open” was the comment in winner’s circle when PRW late model driver #0x Zach Olger stepped out of his car to the roar of applause from a full house of spectators Friday night at Tri-City Motor Speedway.  With the rain that fell on Thursday, the track was heavy and tacky which provided some incredible race speeds and exciting races for drivers and fans.  Olger started eighth in the sixteen car PRW late model field and by lap six, he had already passed front row starter #04 Wade Witherspoon.  Olger would continue making fast paced laps around the clay oval averaging nearly 103 MPH heading to his first TCMS feature win.  Defending Champion and Muskegon native #72 Kyle Borgman finished a distant second with last week’s winner #0p Kris Patterson taking home third.  #23v Ryan Vanderveen and point’s leader #55 Roger Wing completed the top five finishers.  #6r Carl Ries and Olger scored heat wins.

With the evening being “Old Timer’s” Night sponsored by BeCool, it was decided to have some fun races for the Elgin Pro Stock division to remind longtime fans of some of the racing that used to take place years ago at TCMS.  In lieu of heat races, the pro stock drivers ran a pair of Australian Pursuits with the winner taking home additional money based on the number of cars passed in the event. Break the track record qualifying set the line ups with Randy Radabaugh clocked as the fastest pro stock of the night. Pursuit winners were #66 Rick Trewartha and #M65 Rick Spencer.  Also, in honor of the special evening, the feature consisted of a full inversion, which put the fastest cars in the rear of the eighteen car field.  #31 John Zawacki looked like to the car to beat as he led the first eleven laps from the pole before 16-year old rookie #11 Chris Peyerk wrestled the lead away from Zawacki at lap twelve.  However, #54 Chaney Newland, from his fourteenth place starting spot took the lead and led the final three circuits to take the top prize. Peyerk had to settle for the runner-up position.  He was followed by #53 Shane Aeschliman, Zawacki, and #77 Kevin Morell.

J&L Transport IMCA driver #27 Matt Szecsodi looked to get the money off of his back after having terrible luck so far in 2012.  Last year’s point runner up took the lead at the drop of the green flag for the twenty lap feature. He had control of the event for the first five laps before #88 Brody Bowser took the lead away on lap six.  Also making bold moves through the field was the point’s leader #EZ1 of Don Hintz.  Starting from eleventh, he would capture the lead from Bowser on lap sixteen and take home the big payday. #7d Myron Deyoung finished second with #19f Joey Fowler third.  Bowser would have to settle for fourth and Szecsodi fifth.  Heats went to Deyoung and Fowler.

The final event of the night was the highly anticipated Figure Eight feature.  #57 TJ Gilbert had joked in his Auburn Hotel Street Stock Winner’s Circle interview that he would “bring home his car in pieces” in the figure eight feature.  He started on the front row of the twenty lap feature with fifteen other Street Stock competitors on his back bumper.  He successfully maneuvered his way through the intersection for the first half of the event.  However, on lap ten, he made heavy contact in the intersection with #4 Melvin Adams ending both their nights.  #96 Ricky Smith inherited the lead but could not hold off the challenge from #51 Todd Winchell who would take his first ever feature win.  Smith was runner up and was followed by #21jk John Krause, #7r Dave Newcomb, and #1 Randy Radabaugh.
