Loomis Lands Big Win at Tri-City Motor Speedway

07/26/2019 (Auburn MI) Racing resumed at Tri-City Motor Speedway Friday night with The Jerky Outlet as the evening’s sponsor. 126 drivers were on hand to compete in front of the always packed grandstands at the Auburn Michigan speed plant. Forty-three of those were in the SuspensionMAXX Street Stock division looking for an opportunity to grab the final checkered flag of the night, which was worth a stout $1,919 for the win.

Four qualifying heats were run to determine which drivers would immediately lock into the 33-lap feature and which drivers would have to run preliminary last chance races for the remaining starting spots in the main event. The qualifying heats were captured by #02 Will Stanley, #11 Josh Loomis, #41n Ryan Nethers, and the latest Street Stock feature winner #k9 Jim Miller Jr.. Two C-Main races moved the top four finishers into the B-main with #7r Dave Newcomb and #99b Joe Barrons taking home the wins in those event and getting another opportunity to race. Two B-mains were run to lock in the final spots at the back of the 24-car field for the feature with #8 Aaron Spearling and C-Main runner up #60 Jason Begeman topping the field in their respective races. The field of 24 in three rows of eight took the green flag with the front row consisting of Loomis, Stanley, and #50 Jake Thompson. These three drivers were the focus of the entire 33-lap race with Loomis jumping out in front for the first two laps. #1w Loren Short grabbed the lead from Loomis and looked to be the car to beat until he lost power on lap eight sending him back to the pits and out of the event with a 24th place finish. With Short out, Loomis regained the lead. Thompson and Stanley both would keep the heat on Loomis and pulled alongside him numerous times. Timely cautions would be a big help for Loomis as every time the other two drivers would get a run, there would be an incident on the track which would slow down the action and give the lead back to Loomis. After the dust settled, it was Loomis leading all but five laps for his first TCMS victory of the season. Thompson and Stanley would settle for second and third. Season points leader #20 Kyle Thomas and Nethers rounded out the top five finishers.

In other action Friday night, #28 Kyron DeShano extended his 2019 season points lead by not only winning his heat race in the 6-9 year old Walker’s Ideal Trophies Mini Wedge division, but he also dominated the feature event as he finished ahead of the other heat race winner #12 Morgan Bujarski, #27 Pierson DeShano, and #26 Brennan DeShano. In the 10-14 year old class, it was Canadian #14 Ethan Beaulieu winning the feature and #99 Brayden Buehrly winning the heat race.

The American Racing Products Late Models saw an early strong run by pole sitter #03 JC Witherspoon, who had won his heat earlier in the evening, taking charge of the field of twenty. He jumped away from the field before overdriving the top of turn four giving the lead to Houghton Lake driver #6m Dona Marcoullier. Once Marcoullier took the lead, he was gone from the field. A few mid race cautions would give the rest of the field an opportunity to challenge, but Marcoullier was too strong as he led the final 23 laps for another win. #27 Eric Spangler motored from his twelfth place start to finish second and was followed by #113 Kyle Roberts, defending Champion #4t Andrew Terrill, and point leader #19 Derrick Hilliker. Witherspoon would struggle in the closing laps and finished thirteenth. #0p Kris Patterson Jr won the last chance feature. Chris Malek and Hilliker also took home heat gold.

The Thornton Brother Sewer and Septic Service Bomber Stock feature was a battle between the two heat race winners #10 Austin Vennix and #7 Johnny Staszak. Both drivers would come from mid-pack to pull away from the field with Vennix out front. Staszak, who overcame a two-spot penalty for jumping the start, stalked Vennix for 19 laps before he was able to make the winning pass on the white flag lap and securing the win. #01TK Brad Treichel completed the race in third with #14 Lyndsey Helsel and #17 James Antku completing the top five.

The Allstar Performance IMCA Modifieds arguably had the best race finish of the night in their 20-lap affair. Pole sitter #26 James Beaulieu from Chatham, Ontario led the opening lap before Midland’s #42 Craig Vance took the lead on the second lap. Vance pulled away and seemed to be on pace to take his second feature win of the season. However, without the aid of any cautions, #2 Tanner Pray found some consistent speed in the top groove and was able to track down Vance. On the final corner of the final lap the two would lean on each other as they headed to the checkered flag. The contact sent both spinning across the finish line with Pray besting Vance by a scant .096 seconds in a thrilling finish that had the crowd on their feet. For Pray, it was his second win of the year. Behind Vance was defending Champion #79 Nate Jones, current point leader #27 Matt Szecsodi, and #D42 Don Sautter. Heat victories were captured by Vance, Szecsodi, and #18 Chase Burda.

The final race of the night was the Members First Credit Union Pro Stock feature. Bentley, Michigan driver #99 Rick Beauchamp clung to the bottom groove to lead the field for the initial fourteen laps before #3 Loren Short took over the lead. That would be short lived as #69 Nate Murphy stole the lead on lap 17 to take yet another feature win to extend his point lead in the division. #28 Jared Rizer came from the back of the field after being involved in an earlier caution with #x5 Eric Lake, to finish second with Lake also recovering for a third place finish. Short and Beauchamp held on for top five finishes. #27 Rob Westergard and #50 Chad Bennett won the two heat races.
