VanWormer and Spring Showers Beat the Field on Opening Night at Tri-City Motor Speedway

5/2/2014 (Auburn MI) Mother Nature, once again, made it difficult for racing to happen in the state of Michigan this past Friday. With other tracks cancelling earlier in the day due to cold temperatures and pending rain, Tri-City Motor Speedway did everything they could to put on a show to begin the 2014 season. The evening’s activities were sponsored by Keyser’s Port City Racing Products in Portland MI. The fans that braved the frigid temps and frequent sprinkles, witnessed some great racing action before the rains finally arrived.  The Comp Cams Late Model division had a field full of heavy hitters from across the state and was the only class to get their feature completed.  AuGres driver #24 Alex Hubert and Pinconning’s #55 of Jeep VanWormer led the field of eighteen to the initial green flag of their 25-lap feature event. With sprinkles throughout the night, the track allowed the drivers to display their massive horsepower. Three and four wide racing throughout the field during the first 21 green flag laps had the fans on the edge of their seats. VanWormer showed dominance from his front-row start and built with a straightaway lead on the field as he sliced and diced his way through lapped traffic before the first caution. Those two cautions in the final four laps did nothing but slow down the inevitable as VanWormer was able to hold on for the victory. VanWormer was followed by #0P Kris Patterson Jr, Hupert,  #27 Eric Spangler, #11c Rachel Carpenter.  Heat races were won by Hupert and VanWormer. The 8th place finisher #23v Ryan Vanderveen picked up the Keyser Manufacturing gift certificate for the Birky Lift Bar.

Heat races were completed in the remaining divisions. In the Elgin Pro Stocks #71 Timmy Near and #10V Gary Vandermark won their respective heat races. The Auburn Hotel Bar and Grill Street Stocks #28 Jared Rizer, #09c Derrick Crandall, and #75S of defending champion Kevin Strong were winners.  In the brand-new Stevens Cycle Sales and Service 6-Cylinder Bombers the one heat was won by #K11 Kendall Morrison. The Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified class, #27 Matt Szecsodi got an emotional win in his heat with #7D of Myron DeYoung winning the second heat.
With rain washing out the feature events for the other four divisions, those features will be made up this Friday at the beginning of the night. Those features will be followed by the regularly scheduled program.  This Friday night at Tri-City Motor Speedway is Tailgate Night. Bring your grills, cooler, and friends, to enjoy some tailgating before the races!! Late models, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Tri-City Bombers will be back to compete on the 3/8ths clay oval. The Pro Stocks will be the highlighted division of the night with the opportunity to beat the track record and a feature that will pay the winner $734 (the second feature and not the feature to be made up from last Friday). Race time is 7:55 PM.  Check out www.TriCityracetrack.com for more information or download our brand-new smart phone app!!!
