Winchell Criss-Crosses Field to Figure Eight Feature Win

07/07/2013 (Auburn MI)   Saganing Eagle’s Landing Casino in Standish partnered with the Tri-City Motor Speedway on a hot Friday evening to provide a fantastic night’s worth of racing entertainment.  TCMS and the Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club honored #M2 Mike Pashak before the opening ceremonies with a helmet bag.  Ninety-six competitors filled the pits with the hope of victory at night’s end.

Sixteen drivers, led by #71 Brad Bergevin, would take the green flag for the 20-lap Figure-Eight feature event.  By lap two, #0 Ray Derminer would take over the lead and began to pull away as he had mastered the left and right hand turns and found holes through the intersection.  A hard intersection crash with #18 Fred Dow Sr. and #1 Randy Radabaugh.  Neither driver was hurt. Dow was actually able to drive away and continue the race.  On the restart, Derminer would take a commanding lead as the field would spread out creating many close calls in the middle of the course.  Derminer would find himself catch the back of the pack and found himself at a blocked at the intersection.  This allowed #51 Todd Winchell to make a bold move for the lead that he would never relinquish. Derminer would have to settle for the runner-up position.  The remainder of the top five included Dow, Bergevin, and #34 Jerry Oatley

The Auburn Hotel Bar and Grill Street Stock Division feature, as it has all season, has thrilled fans with three and four wide racing during their twenty lap feature.  With twenty-eight street stocks in the pits, getting a spot in the feature was tough.  #31r Bob Robinson won the B-main.  Heats were captured by #7d Brenten Deyoung, #72 Matt Erndt, and #34 Jerry Oatley.  In the feature, #8 Aaron Spearling would lead the first ten laps before seventeenth place starter #75s Kevin Strong weaved through the field to catch Spearling. Strong would once again be the first to the checkered flag and continues to stretch his points lead on the rest of the drivers in the Street Stock class.  Spearling finished second and was followed by DeYoung, #28 Jared Rizer, and #75 Kenny Keller.

Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA driver #78 Brody Bowser looked like the night was going to be his as he shot out a large lead in the feature event.  However, a handling issue began to develop that allowed #7d Myron DeYoung to reel in Bowser and passed him on lap sixteen.   DeYoung would complete the final four laps in the caution-free event to grab another feature win.  #19 Joey Fowler, #20w AJ Ward, #14 Chris Barton, and #42 Craig Vance were the top five finishers. #4s Toby Steele and DeYoung won the heats.

#0x Zach Olger has simply dominated the Comp Cams Late Model division in 2013. For the twenty-five lap feature, #86 Scott Clifford took advantage of his front row start and was able to lead the first seven laps before 2011 track champion #72 Kyle Borgman made the pass for the lead.  He would lead for four laps before Olger made the final pass for the lead and took home his fifth feature win in a row.  Cherry Speedway Champion #5 Brook Brasington, #75 Rod Laney, Borgman, and #21h David Hilliker rounded out the top five. Olger and #4 Chad Anklam visited victory lane in the earlier heat races.

The Elgin Pro Stock heat race winner #10 Brent Reil and #35 Bob Fetters Sr. led the field to the green flag for Friday night’s feature event.  Fetters would take control of the event for the first three circuits. #99 Rick Beauchamp would snatch the lead for three laps before #77d of Darren Mularz took over. However, this would not be the final lead change as #71 Timmy Near, who started eight, made the move with eight laps remaining and finished as the winner for the second time in a row. #01 Randy Radabaugh moved from twentieth to finish second and was followed by #M65 Rick Spencer, Beauchamp, and #77k Kevin Morell. Mularz won the other heat race.
