Wing, Hintz, Mularz, Spencer, and Morell Crowned Season Champions at Tri City Motor Speedway

08/31/12 (Auburn MI)   Five point race champions would be crowned Friday night at Tri City Motor Speedway presented by Red Wing Shoes of Saginaw.  The yearlong battle would come down to the final night for the Elgin Pro Stocks, Auburn Hotel Street Stocks, J&L Transport IMCA Modifieds, PRW Late Models, and the Front Wheel Drive Stock Rockets.

Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame driver #55 Roger Wing only needed to start the 27 lap feature to claim his first TCMS championship.  Nineteen PRW Late Model drivers took Greg Christiansen’s green flag for the feature event.  Front row starter, #E98 Brad Metzer, would lead the opening seven laps on a track that was more about finesse instead of just speed. Tenth place starter #0x Zach Olger was mastering all three grooves to bring his machine to the front of the field by lap eight.  He never looked back and cruised to his second feature win of the season.  #6r Carl Ries finished in the runner-up position.  Wing would take third and was followed by #23v Ryan Vanderveen and Metzer.  Wing and Olger posed for heat race victories.

All season long, #27 Matt Szecsodi has started up front in the feature events but has struggled with his new car.  After finishing in the runner-up position in points in 2011, the 2012 season has been a great disappointment for the Clio driver.  With #EZ1 Don Hintz already clinching the championship the week prior, the feature event was more about pride and the checkered flag than about points.   Szecsodi would take full advantage of his
front row startng position and lead all twenty-two laps to claim his first victory of the season. #20 AJ Ward , Hintz, #19f Joe Fowler, and fourteen year-old Chris Barton completed the top five.  The B-main as captured by #776 Rusty Zeigler.  Heats were won by Szecsodi, #72 Terry Gittens, and Hintz.  #36 Rich Young was the fast qualifier but was unable to break the modified track record.

Last week’s Elgin Pro Stock feature was marred by wrecks and attrition.  This week would be a different story as the race went from green to checkered flag without incident. #01 Randy Radabaugh would enter the night with an eight point advantage over Whittemore native #M65 Rick Spencer.  #71 Timmy Near would only get to lead the first three laps before Spencer took over.  Spencer was on a mission as he knew that he needed a great night and a bad night from Radabaugh to capture his first dirt championship. Radabaugh fought an ill-handling car and was never able to find a fast way around the track and eventually finished tenth.  With Spencer winning the feature and Radabaugh’s bad night, Spencer was able to take the championship by a slim one point margin.  #44 Jeff Haley would take home a season high second place in the feature and was followed by former track champion #91 Gary Shank Jr., #99 Rick Beauchamp, and #77 Kevin Morell.  Spencer and Near would win their heat races.

14 year-old Tyler Morell just needed to make an appearance at TCMS in order to claim the Front wheel drive Stock Rocket title.  Luckily, Morell had a large point lead as his car was not running as quick as usual. Fifteen year-old Fred Dow Jr would sweep both the heat and the feature with #99 Dustin Beauchamp and Morell completing the top three finishers.

The Auburn Hotel Street Stocks was the final division to drive on the track for their Season Championship feature.  #21d Darren Mularz was assured the point Championship by making the feature start.  He would not leave anything on the track as he battled with a number of drivers that led laps including, #67 Ryan Fitzgerald, #21k James King, and #51 Todd Winchell.  At the checkered flag, it was Mularz taking the feature win and the 2012 Championship.  2011 Champion, #7r Dave Newcomb would finish close behind and was followed by Winchell, #7g Dan Krause Jr, and #75 Kenny Keller Jr..  #75s Kevin Strong and Newcomb captured heat gold.

Next week, it is the second annual Battle By The Bay on Friday, September 7th and Saturday, September 8th.  Friday night will include hot laps at 7pm followed by qualifying to beat the track record, Australian Pursuits, a full Mini Sprint show, an autograph session, and live entertainment from the Juice Roosters Band.  Saturday will be a full show of racing as Open Modifieds, Late Models, Pro Stocks, and Street Stocks will be in action for some big cash top prizes!  Saturday racing will begin at 6:30pm.  If you can’t make it, follow all the results via Twitter at or on our Tri City Motor Speedway Facebook page (Don’t forget to “like” us)!!!  Saturday, September 22nd will be the final show of the 2012 season and will be the Season Championship event for the ASCS Sprints on Dirt.  Lte Models, Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds and Topless Pro Stocks will all be a part of the action.
